Reasons To Visit Chefchaouen | Travel | Where To Stay |

If you are planning to travel to the north of Morocco, make sure you add ''Visit Chefchaouen'' on your bucket travel list.  Chefchaouen is only 2 hours 15 minute from Tangiers if you plan to catch ferry from Tarifa or fly. Chefchaouen is in the riff mountains just inland from Tangiers to Tetouen. The city was found in 1471 as a small fortress which exists to this day by Moualy Ali Ben Moussa Ben Rached Alami.

 The Gorgeous Colours.

The colours are the first thing that will catch your eyes when you stroll down the old Medina (town). Chefchaouen is located in the Northwest of Morocco  and is famous for its beautiful streets and buildings that are painted all in stunning blue and white shades.  When you first arrive you would notice the magnificent colors of the city. The city is truly draped in blue.  Every building and street is painted in a lovely powder of blue color that varies the brightness from house to house and street to street.

The Incredible Views

Each of the Northern Morocco cities had their share of breathtaking views that you could stare at for hours and forget all your worries. Chefchaouen, which is situated by two mountains, has amazing views!

Ras Elma

Ras Elma is a river cascading down in a series of small waterfalls giving bustling down to town and peaceful country delights within short walking distance of each other.  Ras elma has restaurants where people can sit and enjoy the beautiful scenery.  Some people even wash their clothes in river, there are many different activities you can do and see whilst you are up there.  There's also a Spanish Mosque siting on the hillside, another short walk from town, locals and tourists go up there to watch the sunset.

Spanish Mosque also known as ''Jamaa Bouzafar''

Places to stay in

There are varieties of places where you can stay in whilst you are planning on visiting Chefchaouen, whether hotels, hostels or apartments you are all covered!

  • Casa Hassan -  In the center of Medina Chefchaouen, the air-conditioned, bed and breakfast, features beautiful rooftops medina views and colourful and unique architecture.  The Casa is also pet friendly if you fancy taking your animals with you on the trip, Wifi rooms and a fireplace.

Hotel Parador ****- Located in the heart of the medina, this hotel is within 10 minutes of plaza ''Uta-El Hammam'' Chefchaouen Kasbah and Ras El Maa waterfall.  Along with two restaurants, an outdoor swimming pool and a bar/lounge. Wifi and car parking are included too.

Hotel Atlas Chaouen- Atlas is located on a hilltop of Chefchaouen.  It offers rooms with balconies and views of the medina or the mountains.  The hotel also organises guided and walking tours of the city,  also free parking and Wifi.

If hotels nor guest houses are your type, there is also a camping site*

Uta-El Hammam

The heart of the medina there is a square which has cafes, restaurants and bazaars.  It is very relaxing to just sit there to  watch the world go by after a day of exploring.

The Kasbah

The kasbah is a heavily restored walled fortress that now contains a lovely garden, a small museum and a small art gallery. The museum shows some fascinating view of the old Chefchaouen, including the plaza and kasbah. the gallery shows the works of local artists.

When is the best time to go?

I would recommend you going during Spring time when the weather is not too cold nor hot. Remember Chaouen is in the rif mountains so unfortunately there is no sea breeze so it's incredibly hot in the summer and absolutely freezing in the winter.

What to expect when I visit Chefchaouen?

Chefchaouen is quieter than other places in Morocco,  instead of vendors inviting you to their shops, you will find quiet men waiting for you to ask them the price of an item. Streets are filled with locals enjoying their day and laughter coming from the children playing football.  You can defiantly try to get lost and observe local life and many kittens in Chaouen.
